Last night was the premiere of the reboot of Thundercats on Cartoon Network. I was a bit apprehensive about this new version but the more I think about what I watched last night, the more I am becoming a fan of this new reboot. Overall, the story has become much richer and the characters are much deeper as a result.
Making Lion-O and Tygra brothers is ingenious. Infusing mystical elements to the storyline brings a nice fantasy/medieval feel to this reboot. Making Cheetara one of Jaga’s clerics is a nice twist also. The underlying love triangle introduced in the premiere will make for some intriguing episodes. I also like how these Thundercats are completely ignorant of technology and treat it as legend unlike the original where they somehow were able to construct a brand new fortress on Third Earth with ease.
Despite hoping that Jaga would become an actual living character in this reboot, it was a nice homage to the original series to have Jaga sacrifice himself to save the Thundercats (albeit in a much different way). He always reminded me of Obi-Wan because of this and still does. Wily Kit and Wily Kat as youngin’s is interesting. Their storyline and how they meet up with the rest of the Thundercats is intriguing. I like how mischievous they are now.
Best of all, Snarf can’t say a goddamn word and as such won’t be such an annoying sidekick to Lion-O like he was in the original.
And in case you didn’t catch it, Claudus (the King) is voiced by the same actor as the original Lion-O, Larry Kenney!
